Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is a similar process to counselling in that a client works with a counsellor/psychotherapist or psychologist to address specific issues or difficulties that are causing distress. However, psychotherapy is a deeper process that often explores recurring ‘patterns’ or ‘themes’.

How psychotherapy enables change
We will work together in exploring your ‘patterns’ and ‘themes’ and the impact they have on you as an individual. Examples of we may explore include your upbringing; challenges you have faced (or currently facing) in life; and how you cope with difficulties. The aim is to enable growth and healing by understanding the causes of certain things and exploring different coping mechanisms.

Psychotherapy – the process and approach
As psychotherapy is a deeper psychological process, the effectiveness of psychotherapy is derived from the consistency and frequency of sessions. I mostly use the psychodynamic approach to psychotherapy; however, I tailor psychotherapy to the person’s needs and other variables that affect a person. Therefore, the therapeutic journey and treatment may be both long-term and short-term, and the period and treatment plan will be collaboratively agreed upon by both of us.

Psychotherapy can be difficult and challenging as it sometimes evokes uncomfortable emotions and memories. This is part of the healing process. With this understanding and knowledge, I seek to create a person-centred, safe, warm and caring therapeutic space to process those emotions and memories.
